If you are sick while on vacation....

If you are sick while you are on scheduled vacation, you may be eligible to have your vacation converted to sick time.  Our Collective Agreement addresses this issue under Article 18.03:

18.03  ILLNESS DURING VACATION

(The following clause is applicable to full-time employees only)

Where an employee's scheduled vacation is interrupted due to serious illness, which either commenced prior to or during the scheduled vacation period, the period of such illness shall be considered sick leave.

Serious illness is defined as an illness, which requires the employee to receive ongoing medical care and/or treatments resulting in either hospitalization or which would confine the employee to their residence or to bed rest for more than three (3) days. At the discretion of the Corporation the illness must be supported by a treatment memorandum.

The portion of the employee's vacation, which is deemed to be sick leave under the above provisions will not be counted against the employee's vacation credits.

If you are going to be off sick or injured for an extended time during which you have scheduled vacation, it is YOUR responsibility to notify the employer of your intent to cancel the vacation period due to illness/injury.
